Introduction to Al-Azhar Park

Al-Azhar Park is a vast landscaped area located in Cairo, Egypt, at 10 Salah Salem St, in the historic district of Al-Darb al-Ahmar. Built on a former reclaimed landfill, it now offers a rare breathing space in the heart of the city and an open view over Cairo’s urban landscape.

Opened in the early 2000s, the park was created as part of a major urban regeneration project supported by the Aga Khan Foundation. Its design combines manicured gardens, shaded walkways, water features and viewpoints, with a layout inspired by the great Islamic gardens, where water, symmetry and perspective play a central role.

The site is especially appreciated for its panoramas of Fatimid Cairo and the surrounding monuments, visible from the park’s heights. You can also find pavilions, terraces and walking areas that enhance the whole, making it both a public park, a heritage project and a very well-known visitor destination.
