Introduction to the Alhambra

The Alhambra is a vast palatial and fortified complex overlooking Granada, in Andalusia. Located on the Sabika hill, it brings together palaces, courtyards, gardens, and fortifications that form one of the great works of Islamic art in Europe. Its address is Calle Real de la Alhambra, in the historic center of the city.

Built mainly during the Nasrid period, the Alhambra is associated with the last Muslim kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula. It was designed as both a seat of power and a fortress, which explains the presence of walls, towers, and refined residential spaces. Its history can be read in the various phases of development and transformation of the site.

The monument is famous for its exquisitely fine decoration: carved stucco, glazed ceramics, Arabic inscriptions, and geometric patterns.
