Independence Square : info and guided tour

Introduction to Independence Square

Independence Square, or Maidan Nezalezhnosti, is Kiev’s main central square in Ukraine, located at Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Kyiv, 02000. It is a large pedestrian urban space in the heart of the city, surrounded by major roads, public buildings, and shopping centers that make it an easily recognizable landmark in the capital.

The square developed over the course of Kiev’s transformation and took its current name after Ukraine’s independence. It is best known as a place of civic gathering and collective memory, often associated with the country’s major public movements. Its importance therefore goes far beyond that of a simple city square.

From an architectural point of view, the site combines open esplanades, underground passages, fountains, and contemporary decorative features. Several statues, columns, and pavilions shape the landscape, while the axis of Kiev’s main street reinforces its role as a symbolic center. The square’s appearance changes with the seasons and the events held there.

Independence Square is famous both for its location in the historic and administrative heart of Kiev and for its cultural and political significance. Visitors come here to experience the city’s lively atmosphere, spot landmarks visible from afar, and understand why Maidan Nezalezhnosti has become one of Ukraine’s most iconic places.
