Introduction to Jogyesa Temple

Jogyesa Temple is one of Seoul’s best-known Buddhist temples. Located in the Jongno district at 55 Ujeongguk-ro, it belongs to the Jogye order of Korean Buddhism. Right in the city center, it offers a striking contrast between the bustle of urban life and a space devoted to contemplation, offerings, and meditation.

The present temple developed at the end of the 19th century and was later rebuilt after fires. Its main hall, surrounded by colorful lanterns, immediately draws the eye. The complex combines painted wood, traditional Korean roofs, and Buddhist decorations, with statues, altars, and floral motifs that punctuate the prayer spaces.
