Introduction to the Kouros of Farangi

The Kouros of Farangi is a large unfinished ancient statue, carved from Naxos marble and visible in the countryside near Naxos. Listed among the island’s historical sites, this kouros is one of the famous monumental sculptures left lying on the ground, recalling the importance of marble art in the Cyclades.

Like other kouroi on Naxos, this work dates from the Greek Archaic period and appears to have been abandoned before completion, most likely because of a crack or flaw in the stone.
