Introduction to Cathédrale la Major

The Major Cathedral, often simply called “the Major,” is located in Marseille, near the Old Port, on Place de la Major. This imposing religious building occupies an emblematic site on the waterfront and strongly marks the landscape of the Joliette district, between the old city and the large port developments.

The building visible today is Sainte-Marie-Majeure Cathedral, built in the 19th century in a Neo-Byzantine style. It replaced an older, more modest cathedral, of which some elements remain integrated into the whole. Its architecture alternates between light stone and darker stone, giving the façade and volumes a monumental and highly recognizable look.

The Major is famous for its domes, round arches, and richly decorated interior features, which recall some of the great Mediterranean churches.
