Introduction to the Pantheon

In the heart of Rome, on Piazza della Rotonda, the Pantheon is one of Italy’s best-preserved ancient monuments. A former Roman temple turned Christian church, it attracts visitors with its massive silhouette and impressive rotunda. Its name refers to a building dedicated to all the divinities, and later to the city’s religious memory.

The current building dates back to the imperial period, after several reconstructions of an older sanctuary. It is best known for its portico of Corinthian columns and its vast concrete dome, pierced at the top by an oculus that lets in natural light. This opening creates a changing atmosphere throughout the day.

Inside, the large circular hall impresses with its harmonious proportions and the interplay between architecture and light. Chapels, tombs, and religious works recall the site’s long history.
