Introduction to Place Masséna

Place Masséna is Nice’s great emblematic square, in the heart of the city and at the junction between the old town and the more recent thoroughfares. It stands out for its vast pedestrian space, arcaded facades, and black-and-white checkered paving, which give it an immediately recognizable identity.

The square owes its name to Marshal André Masséna, who was born in Nice. Redesigned in the 19th century and then extensively transformed over time, it reflects the city’s urban development.
