Overview of Puerta de Alcalá

The Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid’s best-known monuments. Located on Independence Square, on the edge of Retiro Park, it marks a former monumental entrance to the city. Built in the 18th century during the reign of Charles III, it replaced an older gate used for the road to Alcalá de Henares. Its neoclassical architecture, designed by Francesco Sabatini, combines arches and pediments in a solemn stone composition. The two sides are not exactly identical, which makes the monument even more interesting when viewed up close.

The gate stands out for its five openings, engaged columns and sculpted decoration, including trophies and military ornaments.
