About the Sea Organ

The Sea Organ of Zadar is a unique sound installation set along the seafront, on the promenade of Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV. Designed by architect Nikola Bašić, it uses the movement of the waves to create ever-changing music, composed directly by the Adriatic Sea. The site combines landscape, contemporary art, and a sensory experience.

The structure is built into a stone staircase pierced with openings that conceal a system of tubes. When the sea flows into these channels, the air vibrates and creates sounds with shifting tones. The whole installation turns Zadar’s waterfront into an architectural and musical work of art, visible even when the sea is calm.

This site has become famous for its simple and poetic idea, letting nature play the score itself. Visitors come to listen to the sounds produced by the waves, but also to observe the relationship between the steps, the horizon line, and the reflections along the shore. The Sea Organ is one of Zadar’s best-known landmarks.
