Introduction to Skansen

Skansen is Stockholm’s famous open-air museum, located on the island of Djurgården, at Djurgårdsslätten 49-51. It brings together historic buildings from different regions of Sweden, moved here to showcase everyday life, architecture, and traditional crafts from across the country in a single open space.

Created in the late 19th century, Skansen is recognized as one of the world’s first open-air museums. Its founding idea was to preserve houses, farms, and workshops threatened by Sweden’s transformation, in order to show concretely how people lived in different periods and social classes.
