Introduction to the Spice Bazaar

The Spice Bazaar, also called the Egyptian Bazaar, is one of Istanbul’s best-known covered markets. Located in Eminönü, near the Golden Horn, it is part of the large commercial complex associated with the New Mosque. Its atmosphere brings together spice stalls, Turkish sweets, dried fruits and rich aromas.

Built in the Ottoman era, the bazaar owes its name to its historic role in the trade of spices arriving in Istanbul from Egypt and other eastern trade routes. Its stone structure forms an L-shaped building, organized around vaulted corridors and aligned shops, typical of the city’s imperial markets.

The place is famous for its colors, scents and the density of its stalls. You can still find mountains of saffron, cumin, pistachios, Turkish delight, teas and sweets. The Spice Bazaar attracts visitors as much for its trading heritage as for the lively atmosphere that fills it every day.
