Introduction to Wellington Botanic Garden

Wellington Botanic Garden is the major botanical garden in New Zealand’s capital, spread across the slopes of Kelburn above the city center. Located at 101 Glenmore Street, it is a large landscaped area of gardens, plant collections, and shaded walking paths, with frequent views over Wellington Harbour.

The site developed from land set aside in the 19th century for the study and acclimatization of plants. Today, it combines the scientific purpose of a botanic garden with landscape design, featuring seasonal flower beds, groves of exotic trees, and more natural spaces that highlight the contours of the hillside.

The garden is especially well known for the variety of its settings and for several landmark spots, such as the Lady Norwood Rose Garden and the Carter Observatory, located on the higher ground of the park.
