Introduction to Zelve Open Air Museum

Zelve Open Air Museum is located in the Göreme region of Cappadocia, near Avanos. Set in an ancient cave settlement carved into volcanic tuff, the site shows how local people used the natural landscape to create homes, places of worship, and living spaces directly in the rock.

The site is best known for its narrow valleys, sculpted cliffs, and clusters of stacked caves. Visitors can see carved dwellings, stone-cut passageways, and several rock-cut religious spaces. Together, they illustrate the vernacular architecture of Cappadocia, adapted to a very distinctive mineral environment.

Zelve was long inhabited as a village before being gradually abandoned, notably for safety reasons linked to erosion and unstable cliff faces.
