Introduction to Banteay Kdei

Banteay Kdei is a Buddhist temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park, near Siem Reap, Cambodia. Located not far from Angkor Thom, this vast sandstone complex is one of the most evocative Khmer monuments in the region. Its name is often translated as “citadel of chambers.”

The sanctuary is distinguished by its layout of several successive enclosures, accessible through gopuras, and by its partly restored galleries. The bas-reliefs and carved pediments bear witness to the skill of Khmer artisans, even though some parts have been damaged over time. The whole site retains a peaceful atmosphere and a still very ruined appearance.

Banteay Kdei is generally associated with the Angkor period, when religious architecture combined devotional spaces, monumental passages, and sculpted decoration.
