Introduction to Pre Rup

Pre Rup is located in the Angkor Archaeological Park, near Siem Reap, east of the large complex often associated with Angkor Thom. The site features a mountain temple built in laterite and sandstone, whose stepped silhouette stands out clearly in the landscape. Its overall structure evokes the great Angkorian sanctuaries of the monumental tradition.

The building is organized around a square base and several stacked levels, with sanctuary towers placed at the corners and at the center of the upper terraces. The bricks, laterite and sandstone give the whole site a warm tone, especially visible in the late afternoon light. The architecture still conveys a strong sense of mass and symmetry.

Around the central core, visitors can see stairways, galleries and platforms that reveal the religious layout of the site. The reliefs and carved elements are now partly eroded, but the scale of the plan remains easy to understand. Pre Rup is one of the Angkor temples that helps visitors understand the evolution of Khmer monumental forms.

The site is appreciated for its more open atmosphere than some of the park’s densely enclosed temples. From the upper levels, the view stretches over the wooded surroundings and the structures of the complex, offering a clear reading of the sanctuary’s elevation.
