Overview of the Porch of Glory

The Porch of Glory, or Portico of Glory, is one of the most famous sculptural ensembles in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, in Galicia. Located at the western entrance of the building, on the Praza do Obradoiro side, it marks the passage into the church and stands out for the richness of its Romanesque decoration.

Created in the late 12th century under the direction of Master Mateo, this monumental portico was designed as a kind of spiritual threshold. Its three arches are covered with dense sculptures, arranged around a great Christ in Majesty, apostles, prophets and angels. The ensemble reflects the peak of Romanesque art in Spain.

The site is especially famous for its complex iconographic program and exceptional craftsmanship.
